At the south entrance of the park you will see this 10 foot tall bronze statue of Harriet Tubman by Fern Cunningham leading a bunch of slaves to freedom. This is the first statue on city-owned property honoring a woman. The area outside of both of the parks entrances have tiles that were done by children at the USES Children's Arts Centre. Tubman was a abolitionist and an Underground Railroad 'conductor'. Born into slavery on a Maryland plantation,when the plantation's owner died, Tubman escaped. Not having maps she hid during the day and traveled at night following the North Star stopping at underground railroad "stations" along the path to a free state.
Tubman did not stay in the North for long. She would take the same trail back and forth to free members of her family. Soon it became a mission to free as many people as she could. For over a decade, she guided hundreds of individuals to freedom. Known as the "Moses of her people" Tubman was so succesfull in her efforts that a $40,000 reward that was posted for her capture. "I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger". During the Civil War, she became a Nurse and was also a spy for the North.
