This is a quick earthcache located in Shannon Falls Provincial Park, located just off of Highway 99 (Sea to Sky Highway). It is a very popular day use park so you may want to plan on spending a few hours here exploring the area or having a picnic. It also has trail access to Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. The walk to the viewing area is along a well maintained, paved path; however, there is some elevation gain so plan accordingly.
For your own safety and the preservation of the park, obey posted signs and keep to designated trails. Shortcutting trails destroys plant life and soil structure.
Shannon Falls is a horsetail type of falls composed of a series of very steep cliffs that rise 335m (1100ft) above the highway. The tumbling waters of Shannon Falls originate from Mount Habrich and Mount Sky Pilot.
The viewing area is located at the base of the waterfall, also called the plunge pool. Erosion occurs by hydraulic action (the force of the water) and corrosion (the force of the bed load or rocks the river is carrying) as they tumble down the cliffs, slowly removing more and more of the cliff and causing the river to move upstream.
To log this cache:
In order to log this cache, you must do the following:
1. Email the cache owner with your best estimate of how much of the falls you can see from this viewing area.
2. Before the falls developed, about 10,500 years ago, the Howe Sound valley was created by a geological force. Email the cache owner with what this force of nature was that created the U-shaped valley?
3. The type of rock that is being constantly scoured and eroded by the falls can be observed all around you. Email the cache owner what type of rock it is.
