Northeast of Cape Zompolo in Neapolis, Laconia, lies sunk the Turkish freighter Kaptan Ismail Hakki. The 30 meter ship was carrying iron ore and a car (on our first visit to the wreck we had left the impression that it may be a renault 5, possibly for smuggling). For unknown reasons the ship sank on January 30, 1978 without casualties in this bay and a short distance from the shore (100 meters). The minimum depth is about 4 meters and the maximum during our last visit was 16 meters.
This ship belonged to the shipping company Deval Shipping Group, founded in 1881 by Captain Hasan Deval. Then the wooden ships of the company were transporting goods between Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
Later in 1952 the company was bought by Ismail Hakki, whose name he took a ship wrecked in Agia Marina of Laconia. In 1952, Hakki was the first Turkish ship-owner, who turned the movement of vessels from steam to diesel and perhaps in the "KAPTAN ISMAIL HAKKI" was the first diesel ship in Turkey.
This is a very nice photo wreck, lying on her left side on white sand. It is easily accessible from the coast and on days with good visibility the volume of the wreck is visible from shore. She still holds the propeller, which is a rare thing for a shipwreck in Greek waters, especially at such depth.
The shipwreck of Kaptan Ismail Hakki offers some small but safe penetration opportunities, and is ideal for training because of the very small depth and long years of residence.

If you have a vehicle that can deal with an average dirtroad however, you can drive here by following the road from Agios Nikolaos to Profitis Ilias and turn left shortly before arriving at Profitis Ilias, in the sign that sais "Climbing Area". Then drive all along the dirt road, ignore all other signs for the climbing areas, until you reach Agia Marina church. There, turn right and park few meters later at the given coordinates for parking.
