Esta estação faz parte do troço ferroviário, há muito desactivado, da linha que ligava a linha do Douro a Salamanca (Espanha), nomeadamente entre La Fregeneda (Espanha) e Barca d’Alva – Rota dos Túneis.
Construída com o objectivo de ligar a linha do Douro à rede ferroviária espanhola e ao resto da Europa, esta linha é a única construída em território estrangeiro com capitais portugueses, particularmente portuenses.
A Linha Internacional Barca d’Alva a La Fregeneda e Salamanca inaugurada em 9 de Dezembro 1887, no mesmo dia do último troço da Linha do Douro Pocinho – Barca d’Alva, é uma espectacular e notável obra de engenharia ferroviária particularmente o troço Barca d’Alva – La Fregeneda, antes de entrar nas planícies de Leão. Este troço com características alpinas, vence um desnível de 300m em 17km de extensão no qual foram abertos em rocha 20 túneis e construídas 13 pontes metálicas.
Encerrada em 1 de Janeiro de 1985 pelo governo espanhol, esta obra de arte ferroviária permanece esquecida até aos nossos dias.
O percurso inicia-se na estrada principal cerca de 2,2km após passar a localidade de La Fregeneda, em direcção ao interior de Espanha. Segue um caminho de terra batida que surge à esquerda e 1,5km à frente encontra a estação de La Fregeneda.
Como estação fronteiriça do lado espanhol o complexo apresenta vários edifícios em que se destacam o edifício central da estação e o edifício alfandegário cujos sinais de vandalismo e degradação fruto do abandono são por demais evidentes.

This station is part of the railway line, long deactivated, the line connecting the Douro line to Salamanca (Spain), particularly between La Fregeneda (Spain) and Barca d'Alva - Route Tunnels.
Constructed with the aim of connecting the Douro line the Spanish railway network and the rest of Europe, this line is the only one built on foreign soil with Portuguese capital, particularly portuenses.
The International Line La Barca d'Alva Fregeneda Salamanca and inaugurated on 9 December 1887, the same day the last section of the Douro Line Pocinho - Barca d'Alva, is a spectacular and remarkable engineering work station particularly the stretch Barca d 'Alva - La Fregeneda before entering the Plains of Leon This section features alpine wins an elevation of 300m in 17km in length in which 20 were opened in rock tunnels and 13 bridges built metal.
Closed on January 1, 1985 by the Spanish government, this work of art railway remains forgotten to this day.
The route starts on the main road about 2.2 km after passing the town of La Fregeneda, towards the interior of Spain. Follows a dirt road that appears to the left and 1.5 kilometers ahead is the station of La Fregeneda.
As a border station on the Spanish side the complex has several buildings that stand out the central building of the station building and whose customs signs of vandalism and degradation result of abandonment are too obvious.
