Tie hacks were a type of lumberjack that produced railroad ties for the railroads that once traversed across South Park. Remnants of these specialized logging camps exist throughout South Park, including near the Tie Hack Trail in the Pike National Forest. Two men would use a saw to cut down the trees and then use a broadaxe to shape them into a railroad tie. Prior to the Great Depression, tie hacks could earn $2 per tie in nearby Como.

From highway 285, take County Road 18 west for 3.5 miles to the trailhead at Forest Service Road 182. From the trailhead, you can follow the blue diamonds to the Tie Hack Trail or let your GPS guide you through the trees. The Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative offers a printable brochure for the Tie Hack Trail.
