Background
The Adler tale is well documented elsewhere. However, it transpires that this select band of Eagle Commandos contained an additional member, codenamed Lonewolf, who had a separate reconnaissance mission, seeking information vital to his country's efforts.
Lonewolf flew in with the Eagles and intended to accompany them, in order to transmit his findings back home securely. However, after things started going wrong with the Eagles' mission (somewhere around die Mitte, I believe), Lonewolf lost contact with them, and he needed to cut short his own mission and make his escape.
Without the Eagles' secure enciphering equipment, however, Lonewolf had to improvise. Fortunately, he was technically minded and had experience of another system. This was too complex for him to fully implement in the field, but he was able at least partially to use its underlying principles. He deemed this secure enough to use, in the circumstances.
Present Day
As I said above, I stumbled across a stash of Lonewolf's transmissions and notes. When I had eventually decoded them and followed the instructions, I found the remains of a further cache of Lonewolf's possessions. They were in a pretty sorry state after all these years, so I spruced them up a bit and reinstated the cache, just in case others might sometime like to follow in Lonewolf's footsteps. Below I have shared a collection of my findings.
Hausaufgaben
Over the years, careful observers will have noticed a couple of variants of Lonewolf's transmissions in this section of the description: a yellow version (aka Original) and a grey version (aka Revised), which was a required supplement for a time. My current preference is for the Original yellow version which, at the time of writing, may once again be followed without translating the Revised grey version. If you choose instead to follow the Revised grey version, you will still have to decipher the Original yellow (if that's not too complicated to grasp). Both the versions took me a good deal of time to decipher, as Lonewolf does go on a bit.
Feldarbeit
Lonewolf's second transmission. I couldn't tackle this straightaway, but with careful preparation and my notes and experience from the first transmission, I was able to decipher it in the field; it didn't take too long.
Miscellaneous
Last night I emptied out my rucksack. Some of the contents are Lonewolf's, from my original find; the rest is my own stuff. A photo of the contents is here.
One of Lonewolf's original items didn't come out too well in the photo, so I scanned it properly here.
Viel Glück
I won't give any more away here; it's always more satisfying to work these things out for oneself. But the best of luck if you decide to have a crack at Lonewolf's little adventure. Over and out.
Residential Geocoin (October 2018)
Amberel kindly made one of his Top Cache geocoins for this cache. It is called Max Radl. I have chosen to hide it as a RESIDENTIAL geocoin, attached to the logbook. Feel free to discover it, but please do not remove it. Thanks.
July 2023
Sadly, after 11 years, to keep this going there is need of a geochecker stage, which provides some extra instructions.
