Auch für Wiener etwas, was sie vielleicht noch nicht kennen!
If you are a tourist in Vienna, you might like this fountain and this part of the park which is usually not so crowded. I pass it twice a week while jogging around here. Watch out! Maybe you can see me ;-)
Obeliskbrunnen
Der Obeliskbrunnen, ebenfalls am Fuße des Schönbrunner Berges gelegen, bildet den optischen Akzent am Ende der östlichen Diagonalallee und neben der Gloriette und der Menagerie einen der wichtigsten Blickpunkte der Gartenachsen. Wie die anderen Gartenobjekte wurde auch diese Brunnenanlage von Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg entworfen und laut Inschrift am Sockel des Obelisken im Jahre 1777 errichtet. Die bildhauerischen Arbeiten führte Benedikt Henrici, teilweise nach Entwürfen Wilhelm Beyers aus.
Der Brunnen besteht aus einem Bassin, das von einer Stützmauer mit einer vasenbesetzten Balustrade gegen die dahinter liegende Böschung eingefangen ist. Die Mitte der Rückwand ist als ein Grottenberg ausgebildet, der sich bis zum Brunnenbecken vorwölbt, und von Flussgöttern bevölkert sowie von einem Obelisken bekrönt ist. Der Grottenberg ist durch drei Wasserbecken gegliedert, über die sich das Wasser aus dem Mund einer zentralen Maske und aus den Vasen der Flussgötter bis zum Brunnenbecken ergießt.
Der Obelisk, von vier Schildkröten als Symbol der Stabilität getragen, sollte mit seinen Hieroglyphen die Geschichte des Hauses Habsburg erzählen. Diese sind allerdings erfunden, da Hieroglyphen erst ab 1822 entziffert werden konnten. Zwischen Grottenberg und Mauer führt eine zweiläufige Treppe zu einer Plattform, von der aus eine kleine Höhle im Grottenberg den Ausblick in die Allee ermöglicht.
Obeliske standen als kosmische Symbole schon bei den Ägyptern mit dem Sonnenkult in Verbindung. Von einer Goldkugel als Sonnensymbol bekrönt, verkörpern sie den Weg der Sonnenstrahlen zur Erde, während die vier Kanten die Weltrichtungen markieren.
In der barocken Ikonographie diente der Obelisk als Symbol der fürstlichen Standfestigkeit und der stabilen Herrschaft. Der Adler auf der Sonnenkugel, der sich als einziges Wesen ohne Schaden der Sonne nähern konnte, symbolisiert den zwischen Himmel und Erde vermittelnden Herrscher. Bei der Schönbrunner Obeliskenanlage sollte wohl auch der Anspruch auf die unumstößliche und fortdauernde Herrschaft des Hauses Habsburg zum Ausdruck kommen. (Quelle:www.schoenbrunn.at)
Der Brunnen ist von Mitte April bis Mitte Oktober zwischen 10 und 16 Uhr in voller Aktion zu bewundern.
Ihr müsst die Öffnungszeiten des Parks beachten, sie variieren je nach Jahreszeit. Es wurden schon Cacher im Schlosspark eingesperrt. Aber keine Angst, beim Hauptor kommt man immer noch raus!
Obelisk Fountain
The Obelisk Fountain, also sited at the foot of Schönbrunn Hill, provides the visual emphasis at the end of the eastern diagonal avenue, and together with the Gloriette and the Menagerie is one of the most important focal points on the axial lines that transect the park. Like the other features in the park this fountain was also designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and according to the inscription on the socle of the obelisk was erected in 1777. The statuary work was carried out by Benedikt Henrici partly following designs by Wilhelm Beyer.
The fountain consists of a pool contained against the slope behind it by a retaining wall topped by a balustrade with vases. Projecting forward into basin from the centre of the back wall is a mountain grotto peopled with river gods and crowned by an obelisk. The water flows out of the mouth of a central mask and the vases held by the river gods via a succession of three basins into the main pool.
The obelisk, borne on the backs of four turtles as the symbol of stability, is covered in hieroglyphs purporting to tell the history of the Habsburg dynasty. However, these are spurious, as hieroglyphs were not in fact deciphered until 1822. Between the mountain grotto and the retaining wall is a double flight of steps leading to a platform from where a small cave reveals a view of the avenue.
As cosmic symbols, obelisks were associated with the sun cult of the Ancient Egyptians. Crowned by a golden sphere symbolising the sun, the obelisk represents the path of the rays of the sun down to earth, while the four edges signify the cardinal directions.
In Baroque iconography the obelisk stood for princely steadfastness and stable government. The eagle perching on top of the sphere, held to be the only creature that can approach the sun without coming to harm, symbolises the ruler mediating between heaven and earth. You can see this fountain in full action between mid April and mid October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Please note, that the park is closing depending on the hours of sunrise and sunset. It is reported, that cachers have been caught in the park. But don`t worry, at the main entrance in front of the castle there is somebody who will let you out!
