La Graufesenque est situé à 2 km du centre ville de Millau.
A l’âge du fer, Millau, dit Condatomagus, « le marché du confluent », est sur une voie géographique majeure, c’est aussi un carrefour commercial de première importance.
Dans la petite plaine, au confluent du Tarn et de la Dourbie, c’est là qu’a été conservé presque intact un gisement archéologique d’une dizaine d’hectares.
Ce qui en fait le lieux les plus importants découvert à ce jour en Europe, en matière de céramique sigillée gallo-romaine.
A l’époque, les labours et les inondations ramenaient à la surface des tessons de poteries, que la tradition populaire attribuait aux fées, aux Goths ou aux Anglais.
Les premières fouilles ont été réalisées en 1901 par les abbés Malzac et Cérès. Elles s’échelonnèrent durant tout le siècle, ce jusqu’en 1981 avec le concours du CNRS.
Le site comporte une zone artisanale (fours de potiers, entrepôts...), une aire sacrée (temples), et des habitats, séparés par des ruelles. Une analyse en vue aérienne à démontré aussi d’autres grands bâtiments et un amphithéâtre encore enterrés.
Le village, de plus de 650 potiers, fabriquaient et exportaient des millions de vases, de poteries et de vaisselle au vernis rouge dans tout l'empire romain, du 1er au 3eme siècle Après J.C. Les archéologues en ont découvert dans tout l’Empire romain.: de la péninsule ibérique jusqu’au portes de l‘Asie.
Le four présent sur le site pouvait contenir Jusqu’à 40 000 vases dans une fournée …
Pour tout ceux que l’histoire intéresse, le site est payant et ouvert au public pour des visites, de plus, de très beaux exemplaires de vases sigillés sont exposés au musée municipal, place Foch, à Millau.
