LE GISEMENT DE MONTMINS Un jour de 1834, le banquier et géologue Jean-Baptiste Bouillet accompagné de son ami le botaniste Henri Lecoq exploraient comme à l'habitude, le sol granitique du plateau des Combrailles aux confins du Puy de Dôme et de l'Allier. Près de La Bosse, Henri Lecoq remarqua une roche "énigmatique" striée de noir qui émergeait du sol. Il ramena l'échantillon à Clermont-Ferrand et après analyse conclu à la découverte d'un riche minerai de wolfram (tungstène). D'autres minerais furent plus tard découverts tels ceux de tantale, de lithium, de niobium, ainsi q'une importante quantité de kaolin encore exploité µde nos jours. Ce composé entre dans la fabrication de la porcelaine et est aujourd'hui très utilisé dans l'industrie radioélectrique et la microélectronique (isolant, support de puces électroniques, verres ....) Il faudra attendre le début du XXième siècle pour voir naître une exploitation industrielle du filon. Les besoins en wolfram pour l'industrie de l'armement conduit à un essor fulgurant de la mine dès la déclaration de la Grande Guerre. Comme à la mine des Vignes en haute Vienne, l'effondrement du cours du tungstène dans les années 1955 contribua à l'abandon progressif de l'exploitation qui cessa définitivement en 1962. L'Espace Wolframines retrace l'histoire de cette aventure humaine et scientifique qui bouleversa la vie de toute une région, au beau milieu du bourbonnais, non loin de Vichy.
