Kingston Deverill church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin

The first record of a church in Kingston Deverill is in Bishop Osmond's register of 1099 wich was dedicated to St. Andrew.

Parts of the present building originate from the 14th century. These include the tower and the two bay arcade between the nave and the south chapel. The nave, south aisle & chancel were all rebuilt in 1847. The cost of which was met by Harriet, Marchioness of Bath.

During the rebuilding a Saxon font was discovered buried in the churchyard. This font which was renovated in 1982 is still in use.

Also of interest is the battered stone figure lying in the chancel. It is possible that it may represent a member of the Vernon family who were patrons of the church in the 13th century.

The fine, late 14th century wood carving of the Madonna and Child was presented to the church in 1970. It is thought to have come from a cathedral in Belgium.

Please be careful if caching with children or animals as the road will need to be crossed if parking next to the church.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
