Kieft's War Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Perfect Tommy: As I feared, there was some spring cleaning in the area and the cache probably got whacked by a weed whacker. No remains to be found. Difficult spot to hide a cache so I'll archive and let others give it a try - too nice a vista to pass up. Thanks to all that visited.

Geocache Description:

This cache has been designated a Mystery but is actually more akin to a short Multi. The header coordinates will bring you to an overlooked historical marker commemorating a treaty that concluded an early conflict in the metropolitan area.  After some simple math, the nearby final brings you to a nice vantagepoint.

Parking is available nearby the header coordinates. The historical marker notes a treaty ending hostilities between the Dutch (or, more accurately, the Dutch West India Company) and Native American tribes in the region. The treaty ended a war that saw savage massacres and brutal reprisals in Staten Island, Manhattan, New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut, among other places in New Netherland. It was during this conflict that Anne Hutchinson was killed at her homestead in the Bronx.

To find the final, note the two dates on the plaque. Now for each year, add the individual digits up (for example, the year 2012 would be 2+0+1+2=5) and then multiply the two sums together. Let's call that number X. As a checksum for X, if you add up the individual numbers of that number, you should have 13. Now take X (NOT the checksum) and add that number to the following coordinate numbers, dropping the decimal in the accustomed place: N 4110639 and W 7353378.

Bring your own pen. Please note that during peak times (mostly summer), when the booth at the park's entrance is manned, it may cost $8 to enter the park ($4 with a Westchester Park pass). Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. With snow on the ground, this cache may be difficult to find.

[EDIT: 10/26/14] The cache has moved a touch and is no longer hidden in a fake rock. The hide is still deceptive but, at the final coordinates, there are only so many possibilities... The top comes off - you don't have to unscrew it. Please leave the cache exactly as you found it. Due to the exposed location of the final, situational awareness is required. Thanks.
