Sara-Cap NYS Parks: We are in the process of planning for our 2nd Annual Saratoga/Capital District Regional Challenge and are archiving all remaining active 2012 caches. This cache is placed as part of the New York State Park Saratoga/Capital District Region Geocache Challenge. The Mine Kill Falls drops an impressive 80 feet into a hemlock forest. This cache is just off of the Long Path hiding in a unique natural sculpture. Take time to admire it.
This cache is placed as part of the New York State Park Saratoga/Capital District Region Geocache Challenge. There are 44 geocaches hidden within 11 state parks and state historic sites in the Saratoga/Capital District region, and geocachers finding them all will be eligible to enter their names in a drawing for valuable prizes. If you are interested in taking up the challenge, you can pick up a geocache passport at any of the participating parks and sites, or download the passport at www.nysparks.com.
This cache contains a unique stamp which must stay with the cache. Use this stamp to stamp your passport. This stamp is NOT a trade item.
Park in the Mine Kill Falls parking lot located approximately .25 miles south of the Mine Kill State Park entrance on NYS Route 30. The gate is open from 8am to 6pm during the summer months and 8am to 3pm the rest of the year. The Mine Kill Falls drops an impressive 80 feet into a hemlock forest. The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid has been discovered here and is threatening to eradicate the Eastern Hemlock forest. HWA is an invasive species that attacks the needles of hemlock trees and eventually results in the demise of the tree if treatment is not applied. Mine Kill State Park is currently working with volunteer crews to survey and will soon develop a management plan to halt the spread of HWA. This cache is just off of the Long Path hiding in a unique natural sculpture. Take time to admire it.
Mine Kill State Park is open during the summer months from 7:30am to 8pm and 7:30am to 4pm the rest of the year. There is a $3 entry fee into the park during the summer months. You can reach the park office at 518-827-6111 for more information.
