A 5 de Julho de 1953, na presença de S. Ex.ª o Ministro do Interior,
A central hidroeléctrica da Calheta, começou a ser construida em Junho de 1947 e terminou em Julho de 1953.
Dr. Joaquim Trigo de Negreiros, expressamente aqui vindo com o fim de inaugurar a central.
A Calheta esteve em festa - num plágio autenticado dos locais já dantes festejados. Fez-se festa, sim, mais uma festa em louvor da água e da luz, que já trouxeram à maioria da população rural recursos inestimáveis. O acto inaugural foi dos mais luzidos e solenes até hoje verificados no arquipélagos. Ainda se não erguera o altar para a missa campal, já o povo se comprimia no estreito lugarejo da central e se alongava por toda a estrada aberta para acesso ao edifício. E a missa - o Santo Sacrifício da Missa - fez afluir ao local uma mole imensa de gente, trabalhadores da terra e desbravadores de barrocos e sarças, arquitectos de um "solo ingrato e generoso" que é padrão imortalizador do braço humano. A missa foi, na realidade, um bálsamo reconfortante, que buliu com a sensibilidade das gentes e impregnou a natureza de um espiritualismo sádio e fresco. Celebrou-a, em representação de S. Ex.ª Rev.ma o Bispo do Funchal, Sr. D. António Manuel Pereira Ribeiro, o vigário-geral da diocese, cónego Manuel Francisco Camacho. Seguiu-se a sessão solene, plena de elevação e de entusiasmo, tendo adquirido posição cimeira o improviso do senhor Ministro do Interior, hino triunfal à natureza e ao homem, à paisagem e ao trabalho - verdadeiro canto, colorido e vivo à beleza envolvente do local. Depois, a cerimónia da bênção das máquinas, logo se seguindo o funcionamento das turbinas por ligação simbólica do Sr. Dr. Trigo de Negreiros, que premiu, na galeria dos quadros, o botão do grupo número um, inundando de luz todo o ambiente. Novos morteiros estralejaram no ar, e uma sinfonia de sons electrizou o espaço festivo da central. Trocaram-se abraços entre o Ministro e os realizadores da obra. Ergueram-se vivas. Recrudesceu a alegria do povo... e a música entoou mais forte.
