Le port maritime de Bruxelles


Saviez-vous que Bruxelles disposait d'un port de mer ?
Eh oui ! Bruxelles est le port maritime situé le plus loin des côtes en Europe occidentale…

Au Nord, le canal de Willebroek permet l’arrivée de navires de mer qui remontent jusqu’à Bruxelles depuis le port d’Anvers en empruntant l’Escaut.

Au Sud, le canal de Charleroi permet des liaisons avec la vallée de la Sambre et le Nord de la France.

Le port fait transiter chaque année plus de 6 millions de tonnes de marchandises. Situé au cœur d'une vaste zone portuaire et industrielle qui regroupe plus de 300 entreprises, il fournit près de 12.000 emplois (dont 8.000 emplois directs).

À proximité, le pont de la Place Sainctelette a été entièrement pensé par le sculpteur Ernest Wijnants. De style Arts déco, il est orné à ses quatre extrémités de groupes sculptés : deux personnages masculins, deux féminins. L'ensemble est une allégorie symbolisant la richesse portuaire qui se matérialise par les divers objets entourant les statues ou qu'elles tiennent dans leurs mains.

C’est à Auguste De Wever que l’on doit la statue du Monument Maritime. L'œuvre rend hommage aux fondateurs du port maritime de la capitale. À ceux qui avaient transformé le port médiéval en une structure de stature internationale. Les installations maritimes comprennent le port de Bruxelles. C’est là où, pour les vacances, on installe la plage de Bruxelles : Bruxelles les Bains.

Quant à la statue Vaartkapoen, du sculpteur Tom Frantzen, elle exprime l'esprit rebelle qui fait vaciller l'autorité… L'origine du nom vient des dockers du port qui se révoltaient contre l'occupant autrichien. C'est en remarquant la ressemblance de son agent de police avec celui de « Quick et Flupke », personnages de bande dessinée, que Tom Frantzen a décidé de faire un clin d'œil à Hergé en changeant le matricule de l’agent 22 en 15…

De zeehaven van Brussel


Wist u dat Brussel over een zeehaven beschikte ?
Eh ja ! Brussel is de verst van de kust afgelegen zeehaven van West Europa…

Ten Noorden, het kanaal van Willebroek dat de weg opent voor de zeeschepen die vanuit Antwerpen naar Brussel varen via de Schelde.

Ten Zuiden, het kanaal van Charleroi dat de Sambervallei met het Noorden van Frankrijk verbindt.

Elk jaar zijn er meer dan 6 miljoen ton goederen in transito in de haven. Gelegen in een vaste industrie- en havenzone dat meer dan 300 bedrijven bedraagt, verschaft de haven bij de 12.000 werkplaatsen (waarvan 8.000 rechtstreekse).

In de nabijheid, de brug van de Saincteletteplaats die werd uitgedacht door de beeldhouwer Ernest Wijnants. Van Art deco stijl, aan de vier uiteinden is zij versierd met gebeeldhouwde groepen : twee mannelijke figuren, twee vrouwelijke. Het geheel is een allegorie die de havenrijkdom zinnebeeld wat wordt verwezenlijkt door diverse voorwerpen die de beelden omringen of dat zij in handen houden.

Aan Auguste De Wever hebben wij het beeld van het Monument Maritime te danken. Het werk brengt hulde aan de stichters van de zeehaven van de hoofdstad. Aan hen die van de middeleeuwse haven een structuur met internationaal formaat maakten. De maritieme instellingen omvatten de haven van Brussel, deze is verbonden met de haven van Antwerpen door middel van het kanaal Willebroeck. Tijdens de vakantieperiode richt men daar het Brussels strand in: Brusselbad.

Betreffende het standbeeld Vaartkapoen, van de beeldhouwer Tom Frantzen, deze drukt de opstandige geest uit die de autoriteit aan het wankelen brengt… De naam komt van de dockwerkers die zich oorspronkelijk verzetten tegen de oostenrijkse bezetter. Gezien de gelijkenis tussen zijn politie agent met die van « Quick et Flupke », figuren van het tekenverhaal, besloot Tom Frantzen naar Hergé te knipogen door het stamnummer van de agent 22 te veranderen in 15…

Brussels’ harbor

 Did you know that there is a seaport in Brussels?
Well yes! Brussels is the furthest situated port from the coast in Eastern Europe.

Ships coming from the north can join the Brussels’ port from Antwerp’ by sailing on the Escaut and then on the canal of Willebroek.

From the South, Charleroi’s canal makes possible correspondence with the Sambre valley and the North of France.

Every year, more than 6 millions of tons of merchandise pass in transit through this port. In the heart of a large harbour and industrial zone that groups together more than 300 companies, the port provides close to 12.000 jobs (8000 directly port related).

Nearby, the Sainctelette Place’s Bridge was entirely designed by sculptor Ernest Wijnants. Art Deco style, it’s decorated at it’s four extremities with sculptures : two male and two female characters. The whole is an allegory symbolising the harbour richness represented by diverse object surrounding the statues or held by them.

It’s to Auguste De Wever that we owe the statue of the Monument Maritime. This work pays tribute to the founders of the capital’s maritime port, to those who transformed the medieval port in a structure of international stature. The maritime installations include the Brussels’ port. And it is also there that, during the holidays, Brussels’ beach is set.

When it comes to the Vaartkapoen statue, his designer Tom Frantzen intended to express rebellious spirit standing up against authority. The origin of its name is to be related to the port’s dockers that were standing up against Austrian occupation.
