Kálfshamarsvík is an abandoned fishing village with noting more than the foundation of few houses and a lighthouse still standing. People can see where the houses use to stand and imagine how the village used to look like. The scenery is spectacular, even in a bad weather. Really worth visiting
For travelers on road number 1, interested in a visit to Kálfshamarsvík, it is necessary to get to road 745, either through road 74 from Blönduós or through road 75 from Varmahlíð, passing Sauðárkrókur. Once on road 745 make a turn to the west when you see a sign saying "Kálfshamarsvík", at 66° 0,825'N, 20° 23,671'W. There is only about 2 minute walk from a parking spot to the cache but make sure not to hit anything while driving the last couple of hundred meters, since the Atlantic Ocean tends to deliver all sorts of things on the track. Close to the parking area there is a sign in English and Icelandic containing information about the former village in Kálfshamarsvík.
Large stones with engraved steel plates attached to them are prominent in the landscape. These stones identify the locations of houses in the village. The engraving tells the name of the house and former owners (only in Icelandic).
The 16,3 m tall current lighthouse of Kálfshamarsnes (Kálfshamarsviti) was built in 1940 but was not operated until 1942 due to lack of equipment at the time, and replaced an older lighthouse from 1913.
A variety of birds can be seen in the area, including Red-throated Loon.
