Mount Wellington is a 135 metre volcanic peak located in the Auckland volcanic field of Auckland. It is the youngest onshore volcano of the Auckland volcanic field, having been formed by an eruption around 10,000 years ago. It is the largest of Auckland's scoria cones.
Scoria and lava deposits overlie tuff deposits from early eruptions. The 100 metre scoria cone was produced from lava fountaining from 3 vents in the crater. Lava flows streamed from a number of vents to Penrose and then on to the Manukau Harbour forming almost 6km long lava flows
The Auckland Volcanic Field is comprised of monogenetic volcanoes which means it is unlikely that Mt Wellington or any of the existing volcanoes will erupt again. The next eruption if any will probably occur in a new location
Named by colonists after the Duke of Wellington, the native Māori people called it Maungarei and used it for centuries as a pā or hill fort.
Mount Wellington rises beyond the redeveloped quarry to its north
Much of the old lava flow surrounding the mountain has been quarried for industrial aggregates, and the large quarry to the north of the mountain produced 7% of New Zealand's roading aggregate. The quarry has now closed and is being redeveloped for housing. The volcanic scoria cone is of the greatest geological and archaeological interest however.
To claim this Earthcache please email me the anwers to the following questions.:
1: What is the colour of the Rocks that the Mountain is made of?.
2: What is the texture of these Rocks?
3: Would you expect the Rocks to retain water?
4: How far is Mt Wellington from the other Earthcache on Mt Eden GC16BR7 ?
5: Due North from the Trig station is the car park, how wide would you say the Volcanic Crater was?
