Geocache Description:

Pentridge church, a small Middle Pointed structure of flint and stone, consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower, with a broached stone spire containing 4 bells: there are stained windows, and sittings for 100. Its dedication, to Saint Rumbold, is a rarity. The church was rebuilt in 1855 (Ecclesiologist, XVI, 189) in 14th-century style.

There is a wall memorial to Robert Browning the poet. This states Pentridge’s claim to the bones of the first known forefather of the poet. His family came from the nearby Woodyates.
Park in Pentridge – beware - the end of Earthpits Lane sat nav’s think is a road – it isn’t!! Don’t drive past Manor Farm which is at N 50° 57.510 W 001° 57.256 I would suggest parking near the church.
In the churchyard find Wing Commander Beamont's grave by the porch at N 50° 57.586 W 001° 57.244 . Hurricane pilot Roland Prosper Beamont from RAF Exeter was not only one of ‘The Few’ in the days of the Battle of Britain but went on to become Britain’s foremost military test pilot. He was the first to fly the Tempest, the Typhoon and the Hunter and went on to take the Canberra jet bomber into the sky with an unprecedented climb that enthralled a post-war Farnborough air show. Then he did the same with the P1 Lightning, which in 1954 was Britain’s first supersonic fighter. Along the way, he picked up notable ‘firsts’, including various fastest Atlantic crossings and other performance records. He was the first Briton to fly faster than the speed of sound. There is also an engraved window to the Wing Commander, who retired to Pentridge.
From the headstone find the Wing Commander’s year of birth. ABC0
Number of letters in the Wing Commanders nickname = D

Drop back down the footpath from the church and the cache can be found a short walk down Earthpits Lane. This can be a little muddy in places.
If you look at the map you will see that after doing this cache it is possible to continue on to a circular walk, taking in some of the CCC round – CCC71-75 then Chase with a view and Buzzards Cry before dropping down the hill via the other footpath which will return you to the village. A lovely walk with great views. Unfortunately this walk is not suitable for mobility scooters.
