Uma Breve História desvia-se do género de Bryson (livro de viagens), explorando as ciências gerais, tais como química, paleontologia, astronomia e física de partículas. Nela, ele descreve o tempo desde o Big Bang até à descoberta da mecânica quântica, através da evolução e geologia.
Bryson narra a história da ciência através das histórias das pessoas que fizeram as descobertas, como Edwin Hubble, Isaac Newton e Albert Einstein. Bryson descreve graficamente e em termos leigos o tamanho do universo e de átomos e partículas subatómicas. Bill Bryson (Des Moines, 8 de Dezembro de 1951) é um escritor norte-americano. Uma expedição em 1973 trouxe-o a Inglaterra onde se encontrou com sua esposa e decidiu residir. Escreveu para os jornais The English, The Times e The Independent por muitos anos, escrevendo artigos do curso para suplementar sua renda. Viveu com sua família no norte de Yorkshire antes de voltar de novo para os E.U.A. em 1995, para Hanover, de Nova Hampshire, com sua esposa e quatro crianças. Em 2003, Bryson e a sua família mudaram-se de novo para Inglaterra, onde reside actualmente.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is a popular science book by American author Bill Bryson that explains some areas of science, using a style of language which aims to be more accessible to the general public than many other books dedicated to the subject. It was one of the bestselling popular science books of 2005 in the UK, selling over 300,000 copies.
A Short History deviates from Bryson's popular travel book genre, instead describing general sciences such as chemistry, paleontology, astronomy, and particle physics. In it, he explores time from the Big Bang to the discovery of quantum mechanics, via evolution and geology.
Bryson tells the story of science through the stories of the people who made the discoveries, such as Edwin Hubble, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein. Bryson describes graphically and in layperson's terms the size of the universe, and that of atoms and subatomic particles. He then explores the history of geology and biology, and traces life from its first appearance to today's modern humans, placing emphasis on the development of the modern Homo sapiens. Furthermore, he discusses the possibility of the Earth's being struck by a meteor, and reflects on human capabilities of spotting a meteor before it impacts the Earth, and the extensive damage that such an event would cause. He also focuses on some of the most recent destructive disasters of volcanic origin in the history of our planet, including Krakatoa and Yellowstone National Park.
A large part of the book is devoted to relating humorous stories about the scientists behind the research and discoveries and their sometimes eccentric behaviours. Bryson also speaks about modern scientific views on human effects on the Earth's climate and livelihood of other species, and the magnitude of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and the mass extinctions caused by some of these events.
William McGuire "Bill" Bryson, OBE, (born December 8, 1951) is a best-selling American author of humorous books on travel, as well as books on the English language and on science. Born an American, he was a resident of Britain for most of his adult life before returning to the US in 1995. In 2003 Bryson moved back to Britain, living in the old rectory of Wramplingham, Norfolk, and was appointed Chancellor of Durham University.
