CASTELO
Conquistado aos Mouros em 1249 pelos cavaleiros da Ordem de Santiago comandados por D. Paio Peres Correia, o Castelo de Loulé foi integrado na Coroa Portuguesa por D. Afonso III, que lhe concedeu Foral em 1266.
Após a Restauração da Independência, o castelo perdeu o seu valor defensivo e o crescimento urbano foi englobando os muros.
No século XX desenvolveram-se trabalhos de conservação e restauro, com adaptação da antiga Alcaidaria a diversos serviços. No exterior foram demolidas algumas edificações para permitir uma melhor visibilidade das torres e muralhas.
Classificado como Monumento Nacional pelo Decreto-Lei nº 9842 de 20 de Junho de 1924.
ERMIDA DA NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO
Construída após a Restauração da Independência (em meados do século XVII) por ordem de D. João IV, tem como orago a padroeira de Portugal.
Apresenta características do Estilo Chão, com uma nave única e fachada sóbria. No seu interior pode ver-se o retábulo em talha dourada do século XVIII, um valioso revestimento em azulejaria religiosa setecentista e tecto com painel do pintor algarvio Joaquim Rasquinho (século XIX).
As obras de restauro e escavações arqueológicas efectuadas pela Câmara Municipal em 2007, puseram a descoberto vestígios da estrutura defensiva islâmica. Dos vestígios detectados durante a intervenção arqueológica destacam-se os restos de uma das portas de acesso à cidade medieval.
Apesar de não ser necessário entrar para fazer a cache, uma visita ao interior da ermida é muito aconselhada.
Horário de funcionamento: dias úteis – 9h00 às 12h30 e 14h00 às 17h30. Sábados – 9h30 às 14h00. Encerra aos domingos. A entrada é gratuita.
Classificada como Imóvel de Interesse Público pelo Decreto-Lei nº 39175 de 17 de Abril de 1953.
IGREJA MATRIZ
Construída possivelmente no local ocupado pela mesquita de Al’-Ulyà, e sendo o minarete adaptado para torre sineira, a Igreja Matriz de S. Clemente remonta à segunda metade do século XIII.
Na fachada destaca-se o portal ogival e o óculo superior.
Classificada como Monumento Nacional pelo Decreto-Lei nº 9842 de 20 de Junho de 1924.
IGREJA DA MISERICÓRDIA
Construída no século XV, a Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Pobres é também conhecida como Igreja da Misericórdia.
A igreja tem portal manuelino com arco policêntrico e capitéis com motivos vegetalistas.
O cruzeiro remonta também ao princípio do século XV e tem numa das faces a imagem de Nossa Senhora do Ó (ou Nossa Senhora dos Pobres) e na outra Cristo na Cruz.
O Portal e o Cruzeiro da Misericórdia foram classificados como Monumento Nacional pelo Decreto-Lei nº 9842 de 20 de Junho de 1924.
PORTAL DA ANTIGA IGREJA DA GRAÇA
O Convento da Graça, antigo Mosteiro de São Francisco, terá sido fundado após a conquista cristã da cidade com o propósito de servir de base à evangelização da população. Da primitiva edificação conserva-se parte da igreja, grandemente afectada pelo terramoto de 1755. A sua capela-mor foi parcialmente demolida em consequência de um projecto de urbanização e no seu interior construíram-se casas particulares. Resta o portal gótico bem conservado, com colunas encimadas por capitéis decorados com motivos vegetalistas. No gablete pode ver-se uma estrela de cinco pontas. O corpo conventual actualmente existente (à esquerda do pórtico) de arquitectura barroca, encontra-se na posse de particulares.

CASTLE
Conquered in 1249 by D. Paio Peres Correia, this castle joined the portuguese crown with king D. Afonso III.
After the restauration of portuguese independence in 1640 the castle lost it’s importance as a defense building and private houses were built inside and outside the castle.
In the XX Century the fortification was restored and the old alcaide’s house was adapted to Museum. On the outside the private buildings were demolished to alow better view of the towers.
The castle was declared National Monument in 1924.
NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO ERMITAGE
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception – Patroness of Portugal, this small chapel was built in the middle of the XVII century by order of the King D. João IV, in the sequence of the Restauration of the Independence. The characteristic elements of the Estilo Chão (Plain Style) are evident in it’s plant with a single nave and the sobriety of the frontage. The interior is decorated with a valuable altarpiece and beautiful roccaille tiles. The ceiling panel was painted by the notorious Algarve artist-painter Joaquim Rasquinho (XIX century).
During restoration and archaeological works conducted by the municipality of Loulé in 2007, some constructions were found dated from the Islamic period (belonging to the defensive structure of the city).
Even though to find the cache you don’t need to enter the chapel, a visit is highly recommended.
Opening Hours: weekdays- 9h30 to 12h30 and 14h00 to 17h30. Saturdays – 9h30 to 14h00. Closed on Sundays. Free entrance.
It was declared Building of Public Interest in 1953.
MAIN CHURCH
Built in the second half of the XIII century, it is believed to have been built over a mosk. The church tower was probably the mosk tower adapted to bell tower.
On the frontage the main elements are the typical gothic arch and the eye-window above.
It was declared National Monument in 1924.
MISERICÓRDIA CHURCH
Built in the XV century, it is also refered to as Church of Our Lady of the Poor.
It has a Manuelino Style type of portic, with vegetal motives.
The cross, also XV Century, bares in one side the image of Our Lady of the Poor and on the other side a crucified Christ.
The Portal and the Cross were declared National Monument in 1924.
IGREJA DA GRAÇA PORTIC
It’s original name was St. Francis Monastery. It was built after the christian conquest of the city, with the purpose of christianizing the muslim population. From the original building we can still see part of the church, severely detroyed in the earthquake of 1755. The main chapel was demolished in the sequence of a urbanistic plan. The remainings of the gothic portal are well preserved, showing vegetal decorated chapiters and a five pointed star on the top. On the left we can see the baroque building of the convent, which is private property.
The church was declared National Monument in 1924.
