LE ROC SAINT JEAN

Autrefois sur le piton du Roc Saint-Jean trônait une forteresse imprenable. Elle appartenait au comte de Rodez qui entretenait une garnison afin de maintenir son influence sur le Rouergue méridional. Ce château fut l'objet de nombreuses convoitises au moment des guerres de religion. En octobre 1586, l'armée du Duc de Joyeuse, beau-frère du roi Henri III tenta de l'assiéger. Le capitaine des lieux lui tendit un stratagème et l'armée du duc battit en retraite en direction du causse de Saint-Victor; c'est là que la garnison du capitaine attaqua son campement dans la nuit et lui prit une cinquantaine de chevaux et captura plusieurs soldats.
Le roi de France Charles VII séjourna en ce lieu le 13 mai 1437 en remontant du Languedoc où il était venu pour remettre de l'ordre. Cette forteresse devenue dangereuse pour la royauté fut détruite en 1629 sur ordre de Richelieu.

Formerly on the peakof the Rock Saint Jean throned an impregnable fortress. Belonged to the count of Rodez who maintained a garrison to maintain its influence on Southern Rouergue. This castle was the object of numerous greeds at the time of the religious wars. In October, 1586, the army of the Duke of Joyeuse, brother-in-law of king Henri III tried to besiege it. The captain of places tightened him a stratagem and the army of the duke beat a retreat in the direction of Saint Victor's limestone plateau; it's there that the garrison of the captain attacked its camp at night and took about fifty horses and captured several soldiers.
King of France Charles VII stayed in this place on May 13th, 1437 by going back up of Languedoc where he had come to put back of the order. This fortress become dangerous for the monarchy and was destroyed in 1629 on order of Richelieu.
