Almost a drive-by, along the road to the Coral Beaches
The lovely, reed-lined Loch Suardal is usually passed by as visitors dash northwards to Claggan and the walk to the Coral Beaches. Fair enough! But the loch and its environs are very agreeable, in spite of the road and the fact that it is difficult to walk around it.
Loch Suardal, which feeds into the seawater Loch Dunvegan, has been divided by a causeway that now carries the road. A small lagoon was built on the southern side of the causeway, possibly for small boat shelter. Today, the loch is full of reeds and plants. At certain times of year, the loch is a favoured resting place for whooper swans.
The place to park is just as you reach the loch, on the right, by (but not obstructing) a gateway. Walk to the cache from there; it's a matter of only a few strides, and the view across the loch is especially pleasant.
Angler's will find that this mile-long, shallow loch holds plenty of small brown trout and the occasional sea trout and salmon.
