Geocache Description:

The church of St Margaret of Antioch is a historic church in a beautiful rural setting, Built in 1215, the year the Magna Carta was signed.

I highly recommend that you look inside this church, it is left unlocked until around 6pm each day. Inside the church are large murals dating from around 1250. The largest of these is on the north wall and shows St Christopher carrying the infant Christ over a river, and a woman - presumed to be St Margaret - sitting on a hillock, spinning, whilst a knight carrying two keys comes to her rescue. Other paintings show patterns of lillies and consecration crosses in circles. The chancel's south wall shows the martyrdom of St Thomas of Canterbury. These paintings were whitewashed in the reformation, but rediscovered in the 1890's. There is a guide to them at the back of the church. Over the altar is a gun. The legend states that one of the parishioners accidentally shot and wounded his servant. The gun was placed above the chancel as a warning to others. The church is also famous as the burial site of Florence Nightingale. Her grave is straight ahead as you exit the church building, labelled simply "F. N.". On the window sill of the church on the door side are many items relating to Florence Nightingale, and usually there is a display at the back of the church detailing her life. I was lucky enough to marry my wife here in 2006, and shortly our son (caching name H-A-H) was christened here in 2012. The first time I saw this church was on valentine's day 2005. I decided that it was exactly the sort of church I would like to be wed in, and I proposed to my wife there and then in the porch. I have placed this cache to bring people to see the church, rather than as a challenge. The cache is hidden to the left of the gateway The cache is a small lock and lock, which I have left empty except for the log and pen, to allow small bugs and coins to visit. Please, no night caching. Be sure to check out the virtual too! Cache placed with the kind permission of Rev Chris Pettit, in conjunction with the church council.
