Geocache Description:

The coordinates take you to a "Looking For Lincoln" Site Marker at the Ryder Building in Alton’s Antique district. The Lincoln & Civil War Legacy Trail consists of nine Site Markers placed at locations of historical significance. This Marker is Site number two.

Lincoln’s first visits to Alton date back to the early 1840s, when as a young lawyer, he met with clients and practiced law at the Ryder Building. The Ryder building was used as a courthouse for trials, and it was quite possibly the site of the Lovejoy murder trail. In 1840, Lincoln delivered a speech here for Whig candidate William Henry Harrison. In 1844, Lincoln helped Simeon Ryder, a shipping vessel Captain and the owner of this building, collect an old debt. The building originally had three stories but renovation in 1939 removed the top floor.

This location is part of a Self-Guided Audio Tour. Listen to the stories of Lincoln and the Civil War on a cell phone audio tour as you visit each site. To access the tour, dial (618) 767-6122. Enter the site number, followed by the pound key (#). You may stay connected through the entire tour or hang up and call back at each Site Marker.

At this location answer some simple questions to determine the final location of the container which is a short drive from the Ryder Building.

The cache container is located at:

N 38° 53. A B C

W 090° 10. D E F

A = Number of second floor windows in the wall behind the Site Marker + 1
B = Number of windows in the buggy in the picture on the Site Marker + 3
C = Number of round posts supporting the Site Marker
D = Number of people in the picture on the Site Marker + 5
E = Number of support cables on the Site Marker - 2
F = Number of bolts attaching the round posts to the concrete - 4

Checksum of A, B, C, D, E, and F = 25

A short drive is required to reach the final coordinates. There is street parking within 30 feet of the final. The final location of the container is in an Alton City Park and is available only from Dawn till Dusk. Do not search for this cache at night.

The container is a camo painted Bottle Preform that holds only a log sheet.

Bring a writing instrument to sign the log – this is a small log sheet so sign with date and name only.

Bugs, Insects, Critters, Snakes or Poisonous Plants could be present at the final location. Search accordingly.
