Launched in 1999, the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program was a 10-year initiative that honored each of the nation's states. State designs were displayed on the reverse (tails) of the coin. Periodically over the course of each year, five new quarters would appear. Like many people, our family actively sought out examples of all fifty of these quarters in order to collect complete sets. It certainly added an element of excitement to receiving change back from our purchases. Following up on the success of this program, in 2010 the U.S. Mint launched a new 11-year series of quarters featuring National Parks of the United States.
