Geocache Description:

Ruins of Hamamatsu castle

Hamamatsu Castle was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa as a stronghold for attacks on the Enshu Area. He entered the castle in June, 1570 (the 1st Year of Genki) and stayed in for 17 years. It was constructed on a scale extending in distance 600m from east to west and 650m from north to south. The front gate open to the south on the Tokaido route. Extending from east to west were the "SAN-NO-MARU" (outermost outworks), the "NI-No-MARU" (inetermidiate ourworks), "HON-MARU" (keep), and "TENSHU-DAI" (area for the donjon), each becoming higher in order in level.

All the castle lords were from "daimyo" in hereditary vassalage to the Tokugawas and many of them were promoted to the distinctive membership in the "ROJU" (Shogun's Council of Elders). As a result, this castle was called "the castle of success." Tadakuni "Echizen-no-kami" Mizuno is the best known of all. The castle's stonework wasa sturdy build referred to as "NOZURA-ZUMI" typial of an old type of stonework,and is designated as one of the historic relics of Hamamatsu City.

浜松城は徳川家康が遠州攻略の拠点として築いた城で、元亀元年（1570年）6月に入城し、17年間在城した。東西６００ｍ、南北６５０ｍの規模で南の東海道に大手門が開き、東から西へ三之丸、二之丸、本丸、天守台と連なり、順次高さを増す。ここはその天守曲輪の跡である。家康の後、城主は代々譜代の大名が勤め、在城中に老中まで栄進した人が多い。中でも水野越前守忠邦の名は良く知られている。石垣は野づら積みと呼ばれる堅固な作りで、古い石垣の特徴をよく残しており、浜松市の史跡に指定されている。
