Archa úmluvy, (také Schrána smlouvy či Schrána svědectví) byla truhla obsahující nejcennější židovské náboženské předměty: Desky zákona obsahující desatero, Áronovu hůl a manu. Její popis je součástí 25. kapitoly biblické knihy Exodus.Mnozí autoři vidí v arše jakési elektrické zařízení. Podle nich šlo o primitivní kondenzátor podobný tzv. Leydenské láhvi, kterou Evropané vynalezli v 18. století. Každý kondenzátor (tedy elektronická součástka uchovávající elektrický náboj) se skládá ze dvou vrstev vodivého materiálu oddělených jednou vrstvou izolantu. Biblický popis konstrukce archy i oltáře tomu přesně odpovídá: zlato-dřevo-zlato. Jejich správné rozmístění v prostoru pak mohlo vytvářet něco jako rezonanční elektrický obvod...To všechno je biblická archa úmluvy - ale čím byl tento záhadný objekt doopravdy?
Ark of the Covenant
The Ark of the Covenant, also known as the Ark of the Testimony, is a chest described in Book of Exodus as solely containing the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. According to some traditional interpretations of the Book of Exodus, Book of Numbers, and the Letter to the Hebrews the Ark also contained Aaron's rod, a jar of manna and the first Torah scroll as written by Moses; however, the first of the Books of Kings says that at the time of king Solomon, the Ark contained only the two Tablets of the Law. According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark was built at the command of God, in accordance with the instructions given to Moses on Mount Sinai. God was said to have communicated with Moses "from between the two cherubim" on the Ark's cover. Rashi and some Midrashim suggest that there were two arks - a temporary one made by Moses himself, and a later one constructed by Bezalel.

Zvláštní je už to, že Boha tehdy na vlastní oči viděl nejen Mojžíš, ale i další židovští vůdci. Ale nejen to: oni s ním dokonce i družně pojedli a popili, jak doslova tvrdí biblická kniha Exodus. Pak si ale Hospodin odvedl na vrchol hory Sinaj jen samotného Mojžíše, zahalili se tam do oblaku a 40 dní rozmlouvali. Výsledkem byl mimo jiné návod na výrobu archy úmluvy."Uděláš truhlu z dříví setim. Půltřetího loktu bude dlouhost její, půldruhého loktu širokost její, půldruhého loktu také vysokost její. A obložíš ji zlatem čistým, vnitř i zevnitř obložíš ji a uděláš nad ní vůkol korunu zlatou." Jak přesně dlouhý byl starozákonní loket, se dnes neví. Různí autoři proto arše přičítají poněkud odlišné rozměry. Nejčastěji to je 131x79x79 nebo 112x68x68 centimetrů. Měla také zlatá oka pro provlečení tyčí, na nichž byla nesena, ale především zlaté víko označované jako slitovnice. Na něm byly dvě figury andělů: "Ti pak cherubínové měli křídla vztažená svrchu nad ní, zastírající křídly svými slitovnici; a tváře jejich byly obráceny jedna k druhé; k slitovnici byly obráceny tváře cherubínů."

According to the Book of Exodus, God instructed Moses on Mount Sinai during his 40-day stay upon the mountain within the thick cloud and darkness where God was and he was shown the pattern for the tabernacle and furnishings of the Ark to be made of shittim-wood to house the Tablets of Stone. Moses instructed Bezalel and Oholiab to construct the Ark. The Book of Exodus gives detailed instructions on how the Ark is to be constructed. It is to be 21 cubits in length, 11 in breadth, and 11 in height (as 21/2×11/2×11/2 royal cubits or 1.31×0.79×0.79 m). Then it is to be plated entirely with gold, and a crown or molding of gold is to be put around it. Four rings of gold are to be attached—two on each side—and through these rings staves of shittim-wood overlaid with gold for carrying the Ark are to be inserted; and these are not to be removed. A golden cover, adorned with golden cherubim, is to be placed above the Ark. The Ark is finally to be placed behind a veil (Parochet), a full description of which is also given.
