Geocache Description:

MARCH 10th - 11AM - EXPLORATION PLACE

Someone tells you that they just went to Exploration Place and learned all about geocaching.

"Geo-What?" you say.

Learn about a new activity that will get you and your family outside.

GEOCACHING 101

NEWBIES WELCOME

Exploration Place in Wichita, Kansas, is hosting a "Geocaching-101" session dedicated to introducing people to a new outdoor activity called geocaching.

Geocaching (Jee-oh-Cash-ing) is part of a worldwide outdoor game for GPS users. Learn how to use a hand-held GPS receiver, then go on an adventure to find hidden treasure, called geocaches. If you own a GPS receiver, bring it (preferred, but not required) along with some fresh batteries. All ages welcome, as long as you can at least hike across a parking lot and walk in grass. You can come alone or you can come with a friend. A grandparent can bring a grandpup. A wife can round up the hubby. A boyfriend can bring all of the girlfriends. You can get a babysitter and use this as a date night, or you can bring the whole family and the babysitter too. You can call up your buddy and come on down just to see what it's all about. Any and all are welcome.

Geocaching is an outdoor activity where you get to go walking, hiking, biking, boating, touring, etc., to hunt down and reach certain GPS coordinates and find something that was placed there to document that you are one of the many people who have visited the GPS location. When you go after a geocache, you end up seeing amazing places that people generally never see in their lives.

To let the geocaching community know that you plan on attending, log in and post a "will attend" log by going to the box at the top-right corner of this page and click on " log your visit" at the top of the list in the box. In the next screen, click on the text that reads
"- Select Type of Log -" and choose "Will Attend". Add a comment saying that you're coming, and click on the Submit Log Entry button at the bottom of the page.

AFTER the event, you can repeat the logging process, except you will choose "Attended" instead of "Will Attend".

EXPERIENCED CACHERS

Bring your Newbies (prefered, but not required). You know you have the greatest geo-stories. You are invited to help with this event. The more GPS receivers the better. We're counting on the general geocaching public to come and share your geo-guidance as part of the experienced geocaching team. We'll be venturing outside to practice using a GPS receiver to find example geocaches. You can register with the college to see other free classes, or just tell them you're part of the geocaching teaching crew.

In the event of "light" rain, bring an umbrella. We may go outside anyway.

Help would be most appreciated with any of the following.

  • Bring a newbie.
  • Bring your GPS receiver.
  • Bring travel bugs/geocoins for trading/discovering.
  • Bring copies of the geocaching brochure [PDF]
    (black-and-white, print-from-home version).
  • Bring your best stories.
