A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção
ou de Entre Vinhas, do século XVI, tem as características das
chamadas 'igrejas brasileiras', e foi mandada construir por
portugueses emigrantes que, ao voltarem à sua terra natal,
trouxeram com eles traços da nova
cultura.
A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção faz parte de um
antigo conjunto de onze igrejas existentes e fica situada em pleno
campo, fora da vila de Messejana.
É
a igreja da padroeira da Vila, Nossa Senhora da Assunção, e a sua
festa anual é no dia 15 de Agosto, dia em que a Santa sai da
capela, sendo levada em ombros pelas ruas da Vila. Depois da Santa
recolher à capela, a festa passa das ruas à arena numa tradição que
tem em El-Rei D. Sebastião a sua origem.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da
Assunção in Messejana dates from the XVI century, and has the
characteristics of the 'Brazilian churches'. It was built by
Portuguese immigrants who, returning to their homeland, brought
with them traces of the new culture.
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da
Assunção is part of an old set of eleven existing churches and is
located in the countryside, outside the town of
Messejana.
Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady
of the Assumption) is the patron saint of the village church, and
its annual festival is on August 15, the day when the Saint leaves
the chapel, being carried in shoulders by the streets of the
Village.
After returning the Saint to the
chapel, the festival continues in the arena with the traditional
bullfights.
