This cache is located in the area of the NYPD Memorial. The cache is NOT located inside of the large memorial. It is a small log and can hold very small items, maybe even a small travel bug. Please respect the memorial as you are in the presence of heroes.
This cache is placed in memory of all of the NYPD officers that have been killed in the line of duty. From the cache, you can see the Freedom Tower. The original cache contains a travel bug attached to an NYPD patch and small memorial pin.
Fidelis Ad Mortem is the NYPD motto. Translated, it means "Faithful Unto Death." The NYPD is the largest police force in the world. Averaging in excess of 35,000 sworn officers at any given time, it is the eighth largest ARMY in the world. The NYPD has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other police department in the country. All of the names engraved in the memorial walls are sworn NYPD members only.
The memorial was designed by architect Stuart Crawford whose proposal had been one of 180 submitted to an open competition in 1990. Crawford described the life of a police officer as represented by a fountain and a flume, which flow in the warmer months. The fountain represents the rookie cop's first day and serves as the genesis of the memorial. The linear flume acts as the time line of the officer's service. The flume passes through a slot in a granite wall, which represents the day of death. The water then falls into a shallow pool "inside" the monument's outside room. This "sacred precinct" was designed to be removed from the surrounding esplanade to create a sense of peace to encourage contemplation and reflection.
The memorial was finally dedicated in October, 1997 and displays the name of every officer of the NYPD killed in the line of duty while serving the people of the City of New York.
