Geocache Description:

This is an overnight, outdoor winter weather survival event for geocachers. Come prepared to survive.

The 3rd annual winter geo-survival event is back. This event is once again being held near the Mid-Winter Geocaching Get-Together Event. LINK

The location is at Sargent Ponds. You will need to snowshoe, ski, or snowmobile to the event location. We will gather to socialize, discuss geocaching, winter survival, camping, and sleep. At what other event is it acceptable that you sleep at the event location? To log this event, you must sign the log book after participating in the event with your fellow geocachers. As there are other activities in town, the event will be defined as starting at 11:55 pm until 5 am Sunday. You may arrive early on Saturday if you do not wish to hike during night time.

CAUTION: Spending an extended period of time out in mountainous, Winter conditions involves predictable and unpredictable risks, including but not limited to hiking through deep snow, physical exertion, hypothermia, frostbite, and death. You are solely responsible for properly assessing and managing the risks, rewards, local conditions, your physical and mental capabilities, skills, knowledge, and equipment you may need to be safe and comfortable. Participate at your own risk.

As this is not expected to be an emergency situation, you are not allowed to harm or kill any living thing. NYS DEC regulations apply. "Leave no trace" ethics/rules apply. This event may be moved or canceled for safety reasons in the case of severe winter weather. When at the main get together event in town(see link above), please make yourself known to your fellow participants, and check with GPS Guy for the latest info. The trailhead is on North Point Rd. Additional parking and access can be found at the Upper Sargent Pond trailhead.

If you do not own the gear that you determine you need, you can rent it in advance from an outfitter. Contact GPS Guy for suggestions. You should reserve gear well ahead of time, and examine the gear before leaving the store to be absolutely certain you are getting the right size, cold rating, gender, etc. A tall guy does not fit well into a women's sleeping bag, even if alone.

  Believe me, I know.
