In the middle of the night on June 22, 1918, a train carrying 400 performers and roustabouts of the Hagenback-Wallace Circus made an emergency stop to cool an overheated wheel bearing box. Red lights were used to warn approaching trains; however, the engineer of an empty troop train did not see the signal, and plowed into the back of the circus train. Three of the Circus’ sleeping cars were destroyed, and fire erupted. An estimated 86 people were killed in the collision, many of whom were unknown.
Despite local legend, no elephants or other circus animals were killed in the accident. The elephant statues in the cemetery mark the corners of the plot, and each have their trunks lowered in a display of mourning. -- The micro cache is a 35mm film plastic canister, and contains some paper to log your visit as well as a tiny little squirt gun for the first finder. Bring a pen or pencil.
Edit #1 (6/27/03): I just re-read this, and the information was there all along. Now, I'll mention it for a second time: Folks, this cache is in a cemetery. If you find that "creepy" or "strange," you're forewarned: don't go. If, however, you are interested in learning and seeing old Chicago history, then this is a good cache for you. I have never really enjoyed virtual caches; so, that's why I chose to hide a small film cannister - and, it's hidden in a respectful way/place.
