Le Stadium municipal est la plus grande enceinte sportive de Toulouse. C'est le septième stade français par la capacité. Il est situé sur l'île du Ramier, à proximité immédiate du centre de Toulouse.
Stadium Municipal de Toulouse is the largest multi-purpose stadium in Toulouse, France. It is the seventh-largest stadium in France.
Le Stadium accueille l'équipe professionnelle du Toulouse Football Club, ainsi que les grands matches de rugby du Stade toulousain en H Cup (Coupe d'Europe) ou en Top 14 (première division professionnelle). Il a également accueilli des matches amicaux de l'équipe de France de rugby à XV.
La construction du Stadium a été décidée alors que Étienne Billières était maire de Toulouse. Il est inauguré, dans sa première configuration, en 1937, en préparation à la Coupe du Monde 1938. Le stade a subi deux profondes rénovations, en 1949 et surtout en 1997 pour la Coupe du Monde 1998 avec une augmentation de la capacité d'accueil à 36 500 places.
Le stade, situé à moins d'un kilomètre de l'usine AZF, a subi d'importants dégâts lors de l'explosion de celle-ci le 21 septembre 2001. Plus de six mois de travaux ont été nécessaires à sa remise en état.
Inspecté en juin 2009, il est apparu qu'il faudrait augmenter sa capacité de 5 000 places pour qu'il puisse accueillir l'Euro 2016. Le stadium recevra des rencontres de l'Euro 2016 de football. Les billeteries seront rénovées et l'intérieur verra la création d'un balcon dans le prolongement de l'actuel qui verra sa capacité monter de 8000 places.
Stadium is currently used mostly for football matches, mainly those of the Toulouse Football Club and the big games of rugby in the Stade Toulousain in the Heineken Cup or Top 14. It also hosts the test matches of France's national rugby union team. It is located on the island of Ramier near the centre of Toulouse. It is a pure football and rugby ground, and therefore has no athletics track surrounding the field. The stadium is able to hold 35,472 people. [1]
The stadium was built in 1937 for the 1938 FIFA World Cup and has undergone two extensive renovations, in 1949 and 1997.
The stadium staged six matches during the 1998 Football World Cup, including an upset of England by Romania. It was also used as a host venue during the 2007 Rugby World Cup for games such as Japan-Fiji, won by the latter 35–31. On 13 November 2009 the stadium hosted international rugby again when France hosted South Africa. At the time, South Africa were leading the series by 20 wins to 10 (6 drawn).
