Flogberget, which
was opened back in the 17th century and comprises some 15 mine
holes, is one of the most fascinating mining areas in the country.
The mines are located on the top of a hill and are mostly drained
by an underground tunnel. This is an ingenious method, as mining
can be carried out without the need for drainage
pumps.
polerna bytt plats.
dagar)!
Lycka
till!
At Flogberget
there are seven stones beside each other. Behind each stone there
is a sign of where the different types of stones come from and on
some signs what you use the mineral for. Some of these minerals are
magnetic. But why? All this is about paleomagnetism.
Paleomagnetism is the study of the record of the Earth's
magnetic field in rocks. Certain minerals in rocks lock-in a
record of the direction and intensity of the magnetic field when
they form. When volcanic minerals harden, magnetic materials,
especially iron oxide, are searching its way to the mineral. The
power of the magnetism depends on Earths current magnetic
field. Some of the magnetism is staying. The magnetic
strength of a mineral is dempending on earth magneticfields past
strength. The strength earth magnetic field had when the mineral
was created. That is why the magnetic strenght in minerals is
varied. By studying these minerals we have discovered that earths
magnetic field have not been constantly all the time, earths
magnetic field have varied. Sometimes the magnetic poles has even
changed place. Geologists has been able to create an archive of the
history of earths magnetic field. By comparing the magnetic
minerals direction in different layers with the most famous changes
in earths magnetical field they have been able to date these
layers.
Via this we have
succeded to ensure us that the tectonic plates have actually moved.
By measuring the magnetic direction in magnetic minerals of
different ages we have discovered that the tectonic plates have
moved in condition to the magnetical poles. The last evidences come
from soundings with radio cabinets towards distant stars. With
these soundings you can measure the distance between two
radio cabinets, situated on two different continents. If
these measurments are reapeted with a few years between we will get
a significant difference, which is a measure of the continents
moving.
To log this cache
you have to do the following:
- Answer the
question: Which of the seven stones are magnetic? It is written on
the sign (only in Swedish), but test with a magnet if you want to
be sure.
- Answer the
question: The second stone from the left , why does it have a
blue-like surface?
- Take a picture of
you and/or your GPS beside the tree behind the stones.
(OPTIONAL!)
Send the answers
to the questions via mail to me. It is important for you to
wait with the logging until I have answered your mail so you know
all the answers are correct. Logs without answers sent in two
days to me will be deleted without
warning.
Good
luck!
