The Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway
Nobels Fredssenter er en norsk stiftelse, opprettet ved vedtak i Stortinget i 2000 og åpnet i 2005. Nobels Fredssenter skal formidle informasjon om fredsprisvinnerne, Alfred Nobel, Nobels fredspris, aktuelle konflikter og internasjonal fredsinnsats gjennom dokumentasjon, utstillinger, forelesninger, konferanser og andre aktiviteter for barn og voksne. Styret i stiftelsen velges av Nobelkomiteen. Senteret er plassert på Rådhusplassen i Oslo, i hovedbygningen for den gamle Vestbanestasjonen.
Nobels Fredssenter ble åpnet av Kong Harald 11. juni 2005. Talerne var daværende statsminister Kjell Magne Bondevik; styreleder for Nobels Fredssenter, Geir Lundestad; styreleder for Nobelstiftelsen, Marcus Storch og vinner av Nobels fredspris 2004, Wangari Maathai. De ble alle introdusert av Nobelkomiteens formann Ole Danbolt Mjøs. Kong Carl Gustav og Dronning Silvia av Sverige, Kong Harald og Dronning Sonja av Norge var til stede sammen med Kronprins Haakon og Kronprinsesse Mette-Marit av Norge og Kronprinsesse Victoria av Sverige. FN-veteraner stod æresgarde.
Åpningen inngikk i det offisielle programmet for hundreårsmarkeringen av unionsoppløsningen mellom Sverige og Norge. Åpningsseremonien ble regissert av Bentein Baardsson. Åpningsmusikken var komponert av Håkon Berge, og det var første gang hele havnebassenget foran Oslo Rådhus ble brukt som konsertarena. Både kanonene på Akershus Festning og Rådhusklokkene hørtes sammen med perkusjonister og Det Norske Solistkor i et musikalsk verk dirigert av Christian Eggen.
Wangari Maathai sa dette på åpningen:
"Når du går gjennom rommene på Fredssenteret og tenker på de menn og kvinner som har blitt hedret gjennom årene, ser du dine egne tanker, drømmer og håp. Alle mennesker har en del som er gjenspeilet her. Når du ser utfordringene og mulighetene, vil du også bli inspirert til å gjøre det du kan for at din egen verden skal bli et fredeligere sted."

Inside the historical Vestbanen building that once housed the main station for Norway’s west-bound railway, the Nobel Peace Center is taking shape. The Center opened its doors to the public on Saturday 11 June 2005.
The Nobel Peace Center will combine dynamic communication and artistic interpretations. The Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of five, appointed by the Storting (the Norwegain parliament). According to rules laid down by the Storting, election to the committee is for a six-year term, and members can be re-elected.
The committee's composition reflect the relative strengths of the political parties in the Storting. Although this is not a requirement, all committee members have been Norwegian nationals. The committee elects its own chairman and deputy chairman. The Director of the Nobel Institute serves as secretary to the committee.
The Canopy by David Adjaye
Visitors to the Nobel Peace Center will enter through a World Portal sculpture by noted architect David Adjaye. "The World Portal" is constructed out of aluminium and was founded through a generous donation from Hydro. The portal is a large rectangular shape that was developed by the architects and Hydro's aluminium research and development center and is being fabricated by the Marine Aluminium unit at Karmøy, on the west coast of Norway.
