Thursday night, June 7th, 1984. All week has been hot and humid in
the 80's. This night a wind has picked up, giving some relief to
the heat. As midnight approaches, most have gone to bed, one more
work day till the weekend...
|
BOOM! FLASH!
At 12:47A.M., the most intense crash of thunder and
blinding lightning that most residents have ever experienced waken
the town, literally shaking some out of bed...
NOAA weather gets a report a couple of hours later that a temporary
morgue has been set up in Barneveld Wisconsin; nine are dead, 197
injured. It is the first NOAA knows of a tornado in the area...
170 of the town's 225 buildings are destroyed or heavily damaged,
$25 million in damage...
One gentleman is relieved to find his wallet, intact with no
apparent damage. Except his drivers license is missing. It is soon
located; at the Outegamie Airport in Appleton, 130 miles
away...
Another family discovers their 23' RV is missing. Later, the bumper
with license plate is found 28 miles away, of the body or chassie,
nothing was ever found...
The tornado was determined to be an F5, on a scale of
F1 to F6. An F5 has winds of 261 to 318 mph,
and can be 1/4 mile at the base or larger. Make note that an
F6 tornado is described by meteorologists as
Inconceivable, and none have ever been recorded...
As you approach the first
co-ordinates (N43° 0.894 W89° 53.855) you will see the Barneveld
water tower. Stand near this tower looking up into town. Now, look
to your left and envision 2 football fields in distance. Now, turn
to your right and do the same. You now know the width of the
F5 tornado that entered town at this spot, you are standing
in the middle of its path as it approached from behind you and
proceeded into town. As the tornado enveloped the water tower, it
leaned it forward enough that a towel partially went under the
base, as the tower righted itself, the towel was trapped. Nearby is
the well station for this water tower: QUESTION 1: What is this well's
number? |
Proceed up the street to co-ordinates N43°
0.914 W89° 53.707, following the path of the tornado. Find the
memorial plaque at this location, examining the photos and
text.QUESTION 2: How many photos are
there in total?
Continue following the tornado's path to
co-ordinates N43° 1.028 W89° 53.562. Find the plaque that
memorializes those that died from this storm. Dwell for a moment on
those who's lives were impacted by its devastation, lest they be
forgotten. QUESTION 3: For what do
they have Humble Respect?
