Geocache Description:

Five part series put out for COAP 2011-12.

On 12 March 1948 a DC-4 carrying 30 souls crashed into Mt Sanford AK USA killing all onboard. This is a tribute to those men who lost their lives that tragic night. You are looking for camo’d container loaded w/the usual goodies.

SS Sunset

The SS Sunset was a three year old oil tanker owned by a Caltex subsidiary, Overseas Tankship Corp registered in Panama. The officers were Scandinavian and the crew of 24 merchant mariners was American except for one sailor who was British & had dual citizenship. It was built for the war effort and was sold to Overseas Tankship Corp. It was scrapped in 1984 at Kaohsiung China.

It set sail from Chester PA on 19 December 1947 bound for a port “East of Suez”. The SS Sunset sailed around the world taking oil from Curacao to Liverpool & then from Bahrain to China crossing all the major seas!! It arrived in Shanghai 11 March 1948. The crew was then “paid off” and for many years it was believed that the crew was paid in gold!!

Caltex had contracted Northwest Airlines to fly the twenty four sailors back to the United States as their employment had ceased. This was a procedure that some of the sailors had done previous times. They left Shanghai 11 March 1948 on Northwest Airlines Flight 4422. The final destination was La Guardia Airport in New York City. They did not make it.

Congrats to Madpuck & Tagalong for FTF!
