Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

Four months after the Second World War officially began; the 1st Canadian Infantry Division was mobilized and deployed to Britain. After that, many more Canadian divisions formed up and mobilized as well, including:

The 4th Canadian Armoured Division was deployed to Normandy in July 1944.

The 1st Canadian Infantry Division was first mobilized as a formation in September 1, 1939.

The 8th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment (8 Recce) was formed at Guillemont Barracks, near Aldershot in southern England, on March 11, 1941, by merging three existing squadrons within the division.

The 5th Canadian Armoured Division spent two years of the war uneventfully in the UK, finally transferring to the Mediterranean in November 1943.

The 6th Canadian Infantry Division formed in 1942. The 6th was raised as part of a home-defence scheme in Canada, the culmination of various mobilizations throughout 1941 and the following year.

During 1942, the 8th Canadian Infantry Division was a formation that served within Pacific Command in Western Canada, while the 7th Canadian Infantry Division was mobilized and assigned for home defence within Atlantic Command.

The Canadian 3rd Infantry Division's 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade and 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade began embarking as early as 1 July 1941 and arrived in the UK at the end of that month.

The 4th Canadian Armoured Division was created by the conversion of the 4th Canadian Infantry Division at the beginning of 1942 in Canada. The division proceeded overseas in that same year.

On August 19, 1942, with air and naval gunfire support, the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division's 4th and 6th Brigades assaulted Dieppe's beaches.

The 5th Armoured took part in the Italian Campaign, seeing notable action at Cassino in May 1944. The 5th Armoured had originally arrived in the UK at the end of November 1941. The division also saw more action in Italy during Operation Olive in August 1944.

In the wake of the Dunkirk evacuation the 1st Canadian Infantry Division were ordered to France in June 1940. The division trained in England for three years before transferring to the Mediterranean to take part in the assault landing on Sicily in July 1943.
