CACHE
Nemaji to radi ani mistni obyvatele.

Vsichni tri - strojvedouci, topic i vlakvedouci - jsou pod parou a usinaji. Cervene vino jim chutnalo. Uz svatkuji. Mijeji i navestidlo "stuj" na hradle Obecni pole. K mistu nehody z opacneho smeru se blizi navic i rychlik z Bratislavy. Pred Sakvicemi cetu probudi protijedouci nakladni vlak na sousedni koleji a shodou okolnosti pred sebou osadka zahledne navest "volno", ktera vsak plati pro predchozi osobni vlak Os 718. Srazka vlaku je neodvratna.

Rychlik narazil do stojiciho osobniho vlaku v rychlosti 86 km/h. Nasledky byly tragicke: 103 mrtvych, 83 zranenych. Jine zdroje uvadeji statistiku jeste o neco drsnejsi. Osobni vlak prisel o 9 vozu, rychlik o 3 a lokomotivu. Vykolejeny vagon navic poskodil i projizdejici bratislavsky rychlik. "Lidi okradali mrtve, brali jim hodinky, penezenky. Pro zachovani poradku byla nasledujici den privolana armada," lici sakvicky kronikar Jan Svoboda.

Railway accidents - Sakvice

CACHE
The coordinates will take you to a site where the second deadliest railway accident in Czech history occured in 1953. The cache is an easy-to-find PET bottle prefabricate located at the end of the platform, which is freely accessible to pedestrians. I urge you not to annoy the station staff by running across the track or by meddling with any railway equipment; they don't like it. And the watchful local inhabitants even so.

This is essentially all you need for a successful cache hunt. The following info is for those geocachers who want to know the whole story behind this location.

LOCATION STORY
Local train
Brno - Breclav railway line, early morning of December 24, 1953. Local train Os 718 departs from Brno at 1:30 a.m. As scheduled track at the Sakvice station has been momentarily blocked, the train stops at approach semaphore 200 m before station and is awaiting the "clear" signal. Many passengers from Sakvice, believing they have already reached their destination, leave the train, some impatient of them decide to wait no longer, they walk across field towards their homes. Those are the lucky ones, the survivors. Many more people remains in the crammed train, even aisles are full.
Express train
On the same line and direction express train R 4 hauled by an Albatross class steam locomotive 498.033 is rolling. Through village of Vranovice it dashes at 90 km speed. Nobody of the crew has noticed the 40 km/h limit for that section. And no wonder. All three men - driver, fireman and conductor - are tipsy and falling asleep. Christmas at hand, they have drunk pretty much red wine. They pass even "stop" signal at the Obecni pole block post. And to make things worse, another train, an express from Bratislava, comes in the opposite direction. The engine crew wakes no earlier than shortly before Sakvice, thanks to rumble of a freight train they encounter passing by on the other track. They can even see a "clear" signal. Unbeknownst to them, this green light is actually addressed to local passenger train Os 718, already awaiting this clearance for a while. Now, nothing can prevent the collision.
A crash
The express plunges into standing local train at speed of 86 km/h. The results are tragical: 103 fatalities and 83 people injured (some unofficial sources give even greater toll). Nine wagons of the local train were turned into wrecks as well as 3 wagons and locomotive of the express. One of derailed wagons then caused damege also to express from Bratislava, just coming on the opposite track. "People were robbing the corpses, stealing their watches, wallets. To maintain order, army had to be summoned on the next day," describes the events Jan Svoboda, municipal chronicler of Sakvice.
Investigation and penalties
All those, responsible for the accident, were among survivors. They, however, couldn't avoid punishment. Their sentences were as folowing:
- Ambroz Ruzicka, driver - 5 years,
- Stefan Adamec, fireman - 4 years,
- Josef Hubac, conductor - 3 years in prison.
Material damage, as summarised by the court, reached 5 million Czechoslovak crowns. About 30 participants of rescue works recieved awards from President Antonin Zapotocky.
Fate of people
By a coincidence, among passengers there were several people, who had survived another deadly railway accident (an express train - bus collision) at level crossing in nearby Podivin, three years prior to this crash.
Fate of the locomotive
The Albatros 498.033 locomotive was commissioned on May 6, 1947 and initially deployed in Prague. On May 23, 1953 it was transferred to Bratislava. After the crash it underwent repair in works in Ceske Velenice. On November 25, 1966 Plzen depot took it over and the locomotive continued to haul trains until 1970. The decommission proposal dates from April 27, 1970. The locomotive was then converted to a stationary boiler (under designation K 445) and used for heating of its home depot. Finally it ended at a scrap yard in Plzen on December 12, 1973.
Television
The events described above feature in episode 12 of a 2001 TV documentary series Osudove okamziky (Moments of Fate).
