Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in a seldom visited area above Blackwater Canyon.

This cache is best reached by taking US Route 219. Half way between Parson and Thomas you will need to turn southeast on FR 717. From here, there are two ways to reach the cache. The first requires a vehicle with heavy and high suspension. It results in the closest hike(Approx. 3/4 mi.each way). The other, any car can reach the trail, but the hike is longer (2 miles each way). WAY NUMBER ONE: After you get on FR 717, take the first left (FR18). This road is very rocky and rugged. Stay on it until you come to a very rustic picnic area on the right. This is where you can park and begin hiking Canyon Rim Trail. It is blazed yellow, as it is also the Allegheny Trail. If you go past the picnic area approx. 1/4 mi. there is a scenic overlook on the right that is worth a visit. WAY NUMBER TWO: Stay on FR 717 and go to the end of the road. It ends at Olson Fire Tower, which can be climbed by brave souls. The little room on top is off-limits, but the steps provide the best view in Tucker County. After you turn around, and head the way you came, there is a parking area on the right. Park here and walk down the road approx. 100 yards to the Canyon Rim Trail on the right.

However you reach the cache, as you reach the coordinates, there is a sandstone pinnacle on the upper side of the trail jutting up out of the trees. It is about 30 feet high and unique in its appearance. Climb left and up around the pinnacle until it is behind you. All the climbing needed here is easy for anyone in decent condition. There is a small cliff behind the pinnacle. The cache is at eye level on the left side. The cache is a small plastic ammo box.

Use caution in this area as it is prime rattlesnake habitat and there are several dens reportedly in the area.
