Stolen gold
Today Hindhead is a well-known beauty spot. However in the eighteenth century it was notorious for its highwaymen and criminal gangs.
One story tells of a portmanteau containing a quantity of gold that was cut off from a post-chaise at Hindhead. The thief, a man called Pim, used this money to buy some land, and built two paper mills there. It was said that the mills never prospered, one reason being their inaccessibility.
