Geocache Description:

This is a series of 15 caches around the Dartington Hall Estate. We find it an easy gentle walk of about 4.5 miles. The landscape is a mixture of river meadows, woodland tracks and country lanes.

There is space for several cars to park at N50.26.557/W003.41.550 which is near the entrance gate to Dartington Estate at Swallowfields and directions for No.1 of the Trail are from this spot. Parking: As from the 1st May 2019. There are new parking charges at Dartington Hall as follows: 1 hour £1 (free at The Shops at Dartington) 2 hours - £2, 3 hours - £2.50, 4 hours - £3.50, £6 - All day. £1 after 6 pm until 10 am. Public toilets are available. After parking your car you will shortly come to a public footpath which will follow the river northwards towards Staverton. Be aware that this area can be very muddy after rainfall and so sturdy footwear is a must. The walk will continue alongside the river edge passing Park Copse to your left and eventually taking you into the Staverton Ford Plantation - continue uphill. The track veers left but you need to go through the gate in the wall straight ahead and then just follow the path back towards the River Dart and you will join a broad woodland track through North Wood bearing left just before you reach the Staverton Road. Continue up the track until you reach a gate on the right hand side which will take you to Huxhams Cross - go through gate until you reach a footpath on your left which will eventually take you to St Marys Church, Dartington. You will pass High Cross House on your right which was completed in 1932, and was designed by Swiss American architect (William Lescaze) and built for William Curry, the first headmaster of the famous Dartington Hall School. Within the grounds of Dartington Hall there is the Cafe and also a Bar/Restaurant where you can enjoy a drink/snack in wonderful surroundings. Dog friendliness: Be aware there is a possibility of livestock in some fields and dogs are requested to be kept on leads. (NB: Dogs, except guide dogs, not allowed within Dartington Hall grounds). Caches placed with permission from the Land Use Manager of the Dartington Trust.
