Geocache Description:

"The first of its kind, in the Klamath area, this 20' all-steel lookout tower with a 14X14 house on top was built in 1951 atop Chase Mountain for $2,340.00. The structure is welded, with grounds built for lightning protection. The old lookout building was moved to Hambleton Butte to be used as a lookout there."

Today this steel tower still stands and is manned by ODF staff during fire season. It is well equipped and even has electricity! Its not alone on the mountain - there are several antennas and microwave cans. Right below the tower something else is being constructed, probably another communications tower.

To log this cache, go under the tower and look down towards the black rocks. We recommend using a walking stick because the rocks are unstable.

The road to the lookout is not gated and was in very good condition! It is paved all the way to the turnoff (see additional waypoint). The graveled road had just been graded all the way to the top (probably for the new construction). The last 1/4 mile is a little rough, but can be done without 4x4 if the weather permits. There is room to park a couple vehicles at the tower. The elevation is 6348' so it will not be accessible during the winter.
