Um dia que ficou marcado na história da Força Aérea
Portuguesa..
Pouco depois de levantar voo da Base Aérea nº4, o pequeno CASA
C-212 Aviocar 100, com 3 tripulantes a bordo, embateu violentamente
contra a encosta da Serra de Sta Bárbara, deixando os seus
destroços espalhados pela densa vegetação.
O pequeno Aviocar contava com 13 anos e 5 meses de serviço..
Conta a história que o acidente deveu-se a erro de pilotagem
durante um voo de treino.. As condições de visibilidade eram fracas
e a dada altura decidiram solicitar a aproximação por instrumentos
(IFR) à pista da Base Aérea nº4. Aproximação autorizada,
introduziram a frequência no ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) só
que, por engano, introduziram a frequência do Rádio Clube de Angra,
o que fez com que fossem bater no alto da serra..
Ao, já retirado de serviço C-212-100 Aviocar, aos seus
tripulantes neste fatídico dia [Tenente Coronel Lavrador, Tenente
Coronel Bettencourt e 1º Sargento Vitorino] fica aqui, em forma de
Geocache, uma pequena homenagem para que fiquem sempre na memória
de todos.
A Cache:
Está escondida perto da área do monumento [ver foto], para chegar a
este local é preciso caminhar por um trilho que está relativamente
marcado e acessível pela zona demarcada como estacionamento..
Recomenda-se o uso de calçado impermeável e muita atenção onde se
coloca os pés devido ao piso escorregadio em algumas zonas.. Fazer
a Cache num dia em que a Serra esteja limpa de nuvens é o ideal
para se poder apreciar a vista..

A day that will always be remembered by the Portuguese Air
Force..
Soon after taking flight from the 4th Air Base, the small CASA
C-212 Aviocar 100, with a crew of 3, crashed into the mountain of
Sta Bárbara, leaving a trail of wreckage scattered through the
dense vegetation.
The small "Aviocar" was only 13 years and 5 months into
service..
The story around this crash states that the crash was due to
pilot error during a routine training exercise.. Visibility was
weak and the crew requested an instrument based approach (IFR) to
the runway. With the approach authorized, they typed in the
frequency on the ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) only that, by
mistake, they entered the frequency of Rádio Clube de Angra (a
radio station based in Angra do Heroísmo), which lead them straight
into the area of the transmitter on top of the mountain..
This Cache is intended to be a sort of memorial to the, already
decommissioned C-212-100 "Aviocar" and to its crew on that day -
Tenente Coronel Lavrador, Tenente Coronel Bettencourt and 1º
Sargento Vitorino.
The Cache:
It's hidden near the monument placed in their memory [see photo].
To reach this site, you'll need to hike through a trail visible
near the coordinates of the parking spot.. It is highly recommended
that you wear impermeable footwear and pay close attention to your
footing, since there are some areas where the trail is very
slippery.. Also, it's always better to hunt for this cache in a
clear day so that you will be able to enjoy the great view..
