Geocache Description:

This Cache is hidden in Hockley Woods, There is a car park in the north of the woods off Main Road (SS5 4RN), with a playground for your young people. Access to the woods is unrestricted and is also a 20min Walk for Scouts at Belchamps Scout Activity Center, this center provides great activities for young people in Scouting, Guiding and other Youth Groups and Schools.

Hockley is an Anglo Saxon word meaning a small hill, this how this cache got its named, small hill wood.. The woodland has existed here since the last Ice Age. Hockley Woods survives as it is today due to coppicing, a traditional method of woodland management. Extending the life of the existing trees by encouraging new growth from the stumps or roots when cut down. The wood is then made into gates, bridges, fencing, and firewood, as well as many other uses. It is because Hockley Woods has been managed as a valuable resource this way, that they have survived over 10,000 years. Oak and sweet chestnut grow on the higher ground; birch on the most acidic soils, hornbeam on the wet clays, willow, hazel and ash along the streams. Scouting Geocache By......
