A vila é muito isolada, e muitos dos seus habitantes vivem do
que a terra produz. Um dos acontecimentos locais é a Festa da
Castanha, em Novembro. As castanhas são deliciosas e são usadas na
cozinha diariamente. O Curral das Freiras era propriedade de um
casal que vendeu a sua terra ao Capitão Donatário do Funchal, João
Gonçalves da Câmara. Este Capitão doou as terras às suas filhas
quando elas entraram para o Convento de Santa Clara (também
construído por ele). No começo, o Curral das Freiras produzia muita
diversidade de fruta como laranjas, limões, cerejas e ameixas. Mas
a sua maior riqueza residia na cidra, um negócio rentável para o
Convento de Santa Clara.
[ENG]The Nun's Valley is a small village, surrounded by
huge mountains in the heart of the island. The cauldron where this
village was founded and formed by erosion, or, as manybelieve, by
volcanic activity. The village is very isolated, and many of its
inhabitants live off the land produces. One of the local events is
the Chestnut Festival in November. The nuts are delicious and
areused in everyday cooking. The Nun's Valley was owned by a couple
who sold their land to the donaee of Funchal, João Gonçalves da
Câmara. This captain donated the land to their daughters when they
joined the convent of Santa Clara (also built by him). At first,
the Nun's Valley produced a great variety of fruits such as
oranges, lemons, cherries and plums. But its greatest wealth lies
in the cider, a profitable business for the Convent of Santa
Clara.
O Tesouro das Clarissas/ The Clarissas Treasure
Em 1566, as freiras do Convento de Santa Clara, ao fugir de
piratas que chegaram à Madeira nos corsários franceses e atacaram o
Funchal, encontraram aqui refúgio, levando consigo o tesouro do
convento. Conta uma lenda que, terminados os saques, e assim que os
piratas partiram para outros territórios, as Clarissas deixaram o
tesouro escondido algures no Curral das Freiras, por ser um local
longínquo e quase desconhecido. Até hoje o tesouro nunca foi
encontrado, mas há quem diga que ele existe e está bem escondido. O
objectivo desta multi-cache é não só levar-te a descobrir onde está
o tesouro, como também dar a conhecer os locais emblemáticos da
freguesia do Curral das Freiras.
[ENG]In 1566 the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara, fled
from pirates who arrived in Madeira and French privateers attacked
Funchal and found refuge here, taking the treasure from the
convent. Legend says that the looting ended, and the pirates left
for other territories, the Clarissas left the treasure hidden
somewhere in the Nun's Valley, a distant place and almost unknown.
Since that day, the treasure was never found, but some people say
that it exists and is well hidden. The aim of this multi-cache is
not only lead you to discover where the treasure is, but also
showing the most emblematic places of this parish.
