Location:
Two lighthouses are on Garðskagi (Garður peninsula).

The Old Lighthouse
The smaller lighthouse was one of the best lighthouses in Iceland when it was at its best. The lighthouse wasn't high above sea level and therefore well seen in fog. But one disadvantage was because of its height (12.5 m). Big waves blocked the sight to the lighthouse. Connected to the lighthouse is a small room for the lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse had good lighting equipment and was fueled by gas. A lens was used to amplify the light. A weight-driven clockwork rotated the lens and the lighthouse keeper needed to hand wind the mechanism every four hours. It was necessary for the keeper to be in the lighthouse to wind the clockwork.

The New Lighthouse
A new lighthouse was built in 1944 and one of the main reasons for its reconstruction was that the ocean eroded more and more of the coast. The new Garðskagaviti is the highest lighthouse in Iceland at 28,6 meters. The designer of the lighthouse was Axel Sveinsson. It is not only a lighthouse it is also used for weather observations.
