Châtel-Montagne vient du latin Castrum in Montanis, littéralement «
château dans la montagne ».
Le village est situé sur une branche de la voie Romaine reliant les
villes de Vichy et Roanne.
D’importantes foires se tenaient à Châtel-Montagne au XVIème
Siècle.
Le village a été marqué par la présence religieuse entre
le XII et le XVIème Siècle, d’un prieuré et de 4
moines.
Les différents seigneurs qui se sont succédés en tenant une place
importante dans l’histoire locale ont assuré la renommée de
leur fief.
Au Xième Siècle, une importante baronnie règne sur notre village.
Les Seigneurs de Châtel-Montagne figurent parmi les plus grands
vassaux des Sires de Bourbon. On les retrouve compagnons de
Duguesclin et participant aux croisades contre les maures sous le
commandement de Louis II de Bourbon. En 1567, Nicolas de Nicolaï
place le bourg et le château sous la dépendance de la châtellerie
de Billy et de Vichy.

Châtel-Montagne comes from the Latin Castrum in Montanis, literally
"castle in the mountains."
The village is located on a branch of the Roman road linking the
cities of Vichy and Roanne.
Important fairs were held in Châtel-Montagne in the sixteenth
century.
The village was marked by the presence between the religious XII
and XVI century, a priory and four monks.
The various lords who succeeded is taking an important place in
local history have ensured the renown of their stronghold.
The eleventh century, an important barony reigns over our village.
Lords of Châtel-Montagne are among the great vassals of the Lords
of Bourbon. We find companions Duguesclin and participating in the
crusades against the Moors under the command of Louis II of
Bourbon. In 1567, Nicolas de Nicolai up the town and the castle
under the control of the castellany Billy and
Vichy.
