A vein ("filão") is a fault zone or fracture in a field, where the lava rose, reaching the surface or stop halfway.
This geologic formation, called “Filão dos Frades”, corresponds, as its name implies, to a vein (seam) intrusion of trachytic nature that has been exposed by erosion.
Understandably, the Filão dos Frades is only visible because the material that existed around him, has been eroded, leaving the rock of the vein exposed.
About the EarthCache:
You will have to perform five tasks:
a) estimate the maximum height of Filão dos Frades.
b) estimate the length of Filão dos Frades.
HINT: Use your gps for measurement or just walk and use a step like one meter to estimate!
c) now, for the true nature geocachers, another question, what is the perimeter of Filão dos Frades? .
HINT: Walk all the way around it and use a step like one meter to estimate!
d) Please indicate how many other isolated small rocks, related to Filão dos Frades, are visible in the meadow landscape.
e) Do you notice something special on the top of any of the rocks that you counted in d)? Please describe what you see.

Um filão é uma zona de falha ou fracturada no terreno, por onde a lava ascendeu, podendo atingir a superfície ou parar a meio caminho. O filão dos Frades, corresponde, como o próprio nome indica, a uma intrusão filoneana de natureza traquítica, actualmente exposta por erosão. Como se depreende, o filão dos Frades só é visível porque o material que existia à sua volta entretanto foi erodido, ficando a rocha do filão.
Sobre a Earthcache:
Terá de completar cinco tarefas:
a) estime a altura máxima do Filão dos Frades.
b) estime o comprimento do Filão dos Frades.
Ajuda: Utilize o seu gps para medir.
c) Qual o perimetro do Filão dos Frades? .
Ajuda: Contorne todo o Filão dos Frades e estime o valor utilizando um passo igual a 1 metro.
d) indique quantas rochas isoladas, relacionadas (do mesmo género) com o Filão dos Frades é que encontra visiveis no pasto.
e) Nota algo de especial no cimo de alguma das rochas da alínea anterior? Por favor descreva o que observou.
