LĀČPLĒSIS [B.Y.O.P.] Traditional Geocache

1953. gada šajā skvērā tika novietota Leonīda Kristovska veidota skulptūra “Lačplēsis” jeb “Lāčauša cīņa ar pūķi”. Tā veidota no akmens un betona masas ar metāla zobenu un vairogu. Sākotnēji tā bija skulptūra-strūklaka, kurai apkārt bija baseins ar dekoratīvām vardēm. No pūķa atvērtās mutes lejās ūdens. Viss ir skaisti, bet!! – īstenībā, sākumā tas nemaz nebija „Lāčplēsis”!

Lieta tāda, ka 1950.gadā, pēc Gruzijas pasūtījuma, Latvija šo skulptūru darināja par godu Georgijam Pobedonoscam. Gruzijā šis kungs ir nacionālais varonis (viņš pat ir attēlots Gruzijas valsts gērbonī), un tautā viņu dēvēja arī par Svēto Georgu. Taču, kad skulptūra bija gatava, Gruzija negaidīti atteicās no pasūtījuma. Līdz ar to skulptūra nevienam nebija vajadzīga. Lai tā neietu postā, skulptūras autors izdomāja, ka, ja šai skulptūrai „pietaisīs” klāt lielu cepuri un rokās ieliks zobenu (nedaudz izmainot plaukstas stāvokli), tad tas būs līdzigs latviešu nacionālajam varonim Lāčplēsim. Diemžēl „pārvērtības” ideāli nav izdevušās. Daudzi, kuri ir lasījuši Andreja Pumpura eposu „Lāčplēsis”, zina, ka Lāčplēsis ir cīnījies ar trejgalvaino jodu (pūķi/velnu), bet šis Lāčplēsis cīnās ar viengalvaino pūķi. Tāpat, acīmredzami ir arī tas, ka Lāčplēša stāja un zobena turēšana rokās ir „nedabiska”. Zinātāji saka, ka tas ir tāpēc, ka sākotnēji šis skulptūras varonis (Svētais Georgs) rokās turēja šķēpu. 

In the 1953 in this square a sculpture of Leonids Kristovskis “Lāčplēsis” (Bear-slayer) or “Lāčauša fight with the dragon” was placed. It is made of stone and concrete mass with a metal sword and shield. Originally the sculpture was located in the pool with decorative frogs and from the dragon's open mouth the water was pouring, wherewithal it served as a fountain. Sword is repeatedly restored for sculpture, and fully it was renovated in the summer of 2003, when the reconstruction of the square was carried out. Everything is beautiful, but!! – in reality, in the beginning it was not “Lāčplēsis ”!

The case is that in 1950, by Georgia’s order, this sculpture was made in Latvia in honor of Georgijs Pobedonosec. In Georgia this gentleman is a national hero (he is even shown in the national emblem of Georgia), and people called him the Holy George. But when the sculpture was finished, Georgia unexpectedly withdrew from the order. Wherewithal, no one needed the sculpture. The author of sculpture invented so that it would not be lost that if he would “add” a large hat to this sculpture and put a sword in hands (by slightly changing the wrist position), then it will be similar to the Latvian national hero Lāčplēsis .....

Unfortunately, the “transformation” was not ideal. Many who have read epos “Lāčplēsis ” of Andrejs Pumpurs knows that Lāčplēsis  has fought with three-headed Devil (dragon/devil), but this Lāčplēsis  is fighting with one-headed dragon. Also, obvious is the fact that Lāčplēsis  posture and sword holding in the hands is “unnatural”. Experts say that it is because originally the hero of this sculpture (St George) was holding a spear in the hands.
