Geocache Description:

Please check out the Geocaching Association of Great Britain offering support for Geocachers in GB.

Built for the mighty dynasty of the Nevills, this great fortress stands proud and defiant, its history rolling back almost a thousand years.

The Nevill family were the builders of Raby Castle in the 12th century.

One of the most powerful families in the North, they adhered firmly to the Old Faith, and his son Charles, 6th and last Nevill Earl of Westmorland, was leader, with Thomas Percy, of the ill fated rebellion, the 'Rising of the North', in support of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1569. Thus ended the Nevill ownership of Raby, which had lasted for nearly four hundred years.

The Castle was held by the Crown until 1626 when it was purchased by Sir Henry Vane the Elder. The Vanes began a political dynasty which culminated in the beheading of Sir Henry Vane the Younger. The Castle was defended in the Civil War but remained relatively unaltered until three stages of rebuilding occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries.

11th Lord Barnard, Harry John Neville Vane, is the present owner and lives in the castle. Oddly enough, through his grandmother, Lord Bamard is a direct descendant of the Nevills of Raby.

The cache is in a small plastic sandwich box, inside a camouflage bag.

Remember to re-hide it well as it is a popular spot. Watch out for the nettles in summer
